Having heard many stories about how bad this airline was, I really expected the worst. But my experience proved to be very different than what I expected.

I wanted to take a break from the cold Lithuanian weather and in May 2011, I flew from Kaunas to Kos, Greece on Ryan Air.

Perhaps because I paid a few extra litas for priority boarding, I found the boarding process to be very easy. All priority passengers were allowed first on board the flight. So, there was plenty of space to store my hand luggage and little stress in getting a seat.

Yes, Ryan Air uses every opportunity to make money. But much of this is also done by many airlines these days. For example, you pay for all food and beverages consumed. Nothing is given for free. They also sell souveniers and other so called "duty free" items as do most airlines. In addition, there are advertisements on the airplane, they sell lottery tickets and phone cards. They allow you to take 1 piece of hand luggage up to 10 KG. But if you want to check on any luggage, you have to pay for that too.

Does that bother me? No. The final costs, even with priority boarding and checked luggage is quite low.

The best thing about Ryan Air? If you want to fly non-stop direct from Lithuania to some sunny destination like a Greek Island, Ryan Air is the only regularly scheduled airline which you can book directly. If you want to use a travel agent, perhaps you can book a charter, such as Small Planet. But if you want to go to a sunny holiday destination from Lithuania and book it yourself, your best bet is Ryan Air.

In addition, now from Vilnius, you can book flights to some European cities (such as Bremen Germany or Milan, Italy) for amazingly low fares. I have seen fares to Bremen, Germany for euro 30, round-trip!

While not everyone loves Ryan Air, I think I will be flying them again soon and often. After my first experience, I am a fan.

Intensive Lithuanian Language Lessons

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7enGLOhw0No/Td4Co6Q0MkI/AAAAAAAAAYA/IsACUqjEyl4/s400/classroom.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610925087608025666" />

If you are interested in taking Lithuanian Language lessons and having alot of fun at the same time, contact Lingua Lituanica. Lingua Litunica have just announced that they are offering 2 week intenstive courses in Lithuanian from 1-13 August 2011.

My wife and I did this Lithuanian Language course in the summer of 2009. It was a WONDERFUL experience and we got much more than we expected. Every morning, we worked hard on our language skills and every afternoon (and some weekends) we had fun and interesting excursions. Some of the excursions were to museums, some to famous locations (such as Trakai or Kaunas) and others were just cultural experiences, for example eating Lithuanian food or taking a city tour.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Jk0m2aDcj2k/Td4Cu5F14_I/AAAAAAAAAYI/a4zm0fh0DIc/s400/excursion%2B1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610925190372778994" />

Our teacher was Irene, the owner of Lingua Lit. Irene is an excellent teacher, one of the best language teachers I have had (I speak several languages and have had many language teachers). What makes Irene special is her patience and the fact that she really enjoys what she is doing. And it shows. Two years after her course, we still have occasional contact with Irene or some member of her team.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lLtgYDUqzVc/Td4C7ZxZOfI/AAAAAAAAAYQ/ZWk9gkUHOiw/s400/excursion%2B2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610925405303814642" />

Irene and Lingua Lit were recommended to me soon after I arrived in Lithuania and I can recommend Lingua Lit to anyone who wants to improve their Lithuanian Language skills and have fun at the same time.

Blossom of Hope: Charity Evening Raising Funds for Biopsy Needles

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 275px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YvAA1m9wB1w/Tbnn7T_1hzI/AAAAAAAADR0/ejqXX7E-j_M/s400/TulipLying1_w.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5600762617778243378" />
Every year thousands of women get diagnosed with breast cancer. If the desease is caught at the first and second stages, survival rate is much higher than if it is diagnosed at the third or fourth stages. Timely and correct diagnosis saves lives. That is why for the third year in a row International Women's Association of Vilnius and Roche Lietuva have been organizing a charity event to raise breast cancer awareness in Lithuania and raise funds for the purchase of biopsy needles for oncology centers in Vilnius, Klaipeda and Kaunas.

This year well-known artists and designers put together their efforts and donate their works to raise money for the needles. As I enjoy the coffee shops and restaurants of Vilnius, I did not object. I took my laptop and headed towards a nearby coffee shop where I knew that internet was available. When I arrived I ordered a cup of coffee and started to surf the web.

A few minutes later, I realized that a young man about two tables away was coughing loudly and regularly. He was sitting at a table of two others who did not seem to notice. But it made me very uncomfortable. There were two possibilties. The young man is a frequent smoker or he had a lung infection. I paid for my coffee and left. Why?

A few years ago, my wife and I were staying in a hotel and a family with a young child was seated at a table next to us. The child was obviously very sick. We changed tables. But either we did not go far enough or it was too late. My wife became very ill the next day. She visited a doctor who prescribed antiobiotices. It took about 1 month until she was better again. It was one of the worst illnesses she has had since we have been together.

So, after leaving the first cafe, I went to another. Moments after I sat down, a young woman sat down a couple of tables away and began to cough regularly. Again I left. I went to several cafes and experienced the same thing. Eventually I gave up and went home.

Don't people understand that when they cough, they are potentially giving their illness to everyone else? This is not new. Ruby O Stern wrote about it in the British Medical Journal in 1938.

Severe lung infections such as pertussis (whooping cough) are spread this way. "People with pertussis can spread the disease by coughing or sneezing while in close contact with others, who then breathe in the pertussis bacteria.". No kidding. The rate of pertussis infection is rapidly rising and it can be deadly, easpecially to babies. Having a baby at home, I am very conscious of this. Of course he has been vaccinated, but no vaccine is 100% effective. Don't people understand this? Or they just don't care? This does not just happen in Vilnius. It happens everywhere.

If you are sick, and unless it is urgently necessary to do otherwise, stay home until you are better. To do otherwise just puts someone else at risk of getting ill.

Lithuanian Train and Bus Time Tables

I have been looking for a good English language schedule for Lithuanian Trains and Buses and I think that I finally found one. Most of the ones that I have seen in the past were just a list of times and these quickly go out of date.

This is a data base which looks like it might always be up to date. However, one thing to becareful of. Even though you can search by date, the database seems to show all trains and buses that go on a particular route regardless of what date they travel. So, look in the right hand column to see if the day of the week is correct for when you need to travel.

http://www.118.lt/transporto-tvarkarasciai

Ebay and Amazon: Excellent Resources For Lithuania

Living in Lithuania makes you a resourceful shopper. Some brands are not available here and others are priced too high for this market. While most things are less expensive in Lithuania then else where, for example, standard factory made printing cartriges are approximately twice as expensive as elsewhere. The solution Amazon.co.uk and Ebay.co.uk

I can usually buy printing cartriges from the UK and have them shipped here very inexpensively. Since Lithuania and the UK are in the EC, there is no import taxes. Most things get sent by Post and we have found the Lithuanian postal service to be very reliable.

Recently we wanted to buy footed pajamas for our baby, as he has worn them all his life. But we found it very difficult to buy them in his size here. Fortunately we could get footed pajamas shipped to us from the UK by using Ebay.co.com. The price, including shipping was approximately what we would have paid locally if we could have found them here.

Unfortunately, not all products available from Ebay and Amazon can be shipped here. But between the two, we are usually able to get many of the hard to find things we need. If you are looking for a English book, by all means consider Bookdepository.com. Book Depository not only ships to Lithuania, they ship for FREE!

Flash Mob In Vilnius, Lithuania

You may not be aware of Flash Mobs, when a group of people suddenly break out in some kind of entertainment, usually a choregraphed dance performance.

Recently there was a Flash Mob Performance at a local Vilnius shopping mall. Apparently Lithuania wants Japanese engineers to build a nuclear reactor in Lithuania!!! According the article in Bloomberg:

"Lithuania is in talks with Japan about cooperation on nuclear energy". Further: Japan “has very high standard of nuclear safety” that would allow Lithuania to meet environmental commitments required by the European Union, Darulis said. Wow! I bet he wishes he could take those words back.

I would certainly hope that this idea is given a bit more consideration as the rest of Europe is looking at decommissioning their nuclear power plants in the wake of Japanese nuclear plant meltdowns.

Taxi Fares In Lithuania

I have written before that to get the best taxi fares in Lithuania call the taxi and don't get into a waiting taxi.

Recently, I met a friend at the Akropolis Shopping Mall, located approximately 9km from the center of Vilnius. I told him to be sure to call and not get a waiting taxi, as the fares would be 3 to 5 times higher.

I told him a taxi ride should cost him between 15-20 Litas. When we arrived, he asked "How much did you say it a taxi ride would cost?"

I told him that our taxi ride had cost 14.50 lta. He told me he spent 45 lta to get there. Let's hope so. With any luck the switch to the Euro could be delayed forever.

I was in The Netherlands when the Guilder Switched to the Euro. The result was incredible inflation. Everything got more expensive nearly overnight.

Many countries experienced mass inflation immediately after switching to the Euro.

many manufacturers and retailers, hotels and restaurants have taken advantage of the unfamiliarity of the new currency to increase their prices sharply.

This was a common experience. Everyone that I know who experienced the change from the national currency to the Euro agrees that it came at a high price.

An opinion poll published this month in France revealed that 96 per cent of French citizens were convinced that the euro had brought higher prices. Other surveys show that about 60 per cent of people in Euro-zone countries believe the currency has been inflationary.

Two years ago, during a trip to Paris, we were shocked to discover that a glass of beer in any pub or brasserie cost euro 10 or approximately 35 lta. That is approximately FIVE TIMES the price of a beer in a Lithuanian Restaurant. Everything from apartment rent to taxi rates to hotel rooms are much more expensive in the Euro zone.

Rest assured that when the Euro comes to Lithuania, costs will skyrocket. Hopefully, there will be a very long delay until that happens.

Challenges of Raising A Child As An Expat

For expats, the simple task of raising a child can be challenging, but it is not impossible. Somethings that a local person might find easy, can be quite difficult when you are not local.

For example, it took us some time to find a pediatrician who we liked and could trust. We went through about five pediatricians, but have finally found a wonderful doctor who is perfect. We feel comfortable with her and feel we can talk to her about everything. She has been a great help navigating the Lithuanian healthcare system. She even makes house calls, something that is almost unheard of in many countries.

But the task does not stop there. You have to find the right food and the right clothes. We have tested everything from the local baby foods to the local footed pajamas. It has only been possible due to the fact that we have slowly developed a social network and have many people to ask for help advice.

The next challenge which will soon confront us is to find the right school. Will it be a local school or a school for foreigners? We have not yet decided but must face that decision quite soon. Not something we are looking forward to.

Escape From Lithuanian Winters: Options Are Limited

As written, winters in Lithuania are tough. The snow is deep, the light is low and the cold is bone chilling. What makes it even tougher is that there are very few places to escape to for a bit of sun.

This winter, there were two places on offer by most Lithuanian Travel Agents:

* Tenerife: This is a wonderful escape destination. Tenerife has warm weather all year round. But for some reason that I don't understand, it is a 10 hour flight from Vilnius to Tenerife. From almost any other place in Europe it takes about 4 or 5 hours. But the flights from Vilnius stop in Spain, before proceeding to Tenerife. A flight from Vilnius to Tenerife is a long journey.

* Egypt: We all know about travel to Egypt. Egypt has winter sun, but it is also unstable. We considered going to Egypt as it was the only destination offered by the local travel agents with non-stop flights. Fortunately, we did not. This was a mistake and it has cost Lithuanian Travel Agents dearly.

We hope that in the future, more stable destinations will be offered by travel agents. Direct flights to Tenerife or other destinations in the Canary Islands would be very welcome indeed.

Winters In Lithuania Are Tough

As I have written before, I like living in Lithuanina. Quality of life is very good here. But winters are tough and not for the faint at heart. What don't I like about winters in Lithuania?

* Lack of sun: Not only are the skies often overcast with clouds, but also, the day starts late and ends early. It depends on what month exactly, but 6 or 7 hours of daylight filtered through low hanging clouds is what you will get. According to wikipedia, the suicide rate in Lithuania is one of the highest in the world. No wonder.

* Cold Temperatures: January is the coldest month of the year and lows can average around -5 to -10 centigrade, but on some days dip to -20 or -30.

* Wind: The wind child factor and humidity make the temperatures even more brutal.

* The cold weather goes on a very long time from November until March.

But the very WORST part of winter is that the streets and sidewalks get covered with a thick layer of ice and often snow. There is very little care of the streets and sidewalks in the winter and waking can be a challenge. It is hard to understand why more attention is not paid to snow and ice removal of the streets and sidewalks at least of the old town.

Springs and Summers in Lithuania are beautiful and tend to make up for the nasty winters. If you are planning to travel to Lithuania, keep it in mind that winters are not the best time to visit.

Traveling To Lithunia? With that price you also get telephone credit, so it costs virtually nothing.

The Pildyk/Tele2 Sim card that you will buy in the kiosk is a prepaid card. Once your card runs out of money, you can buy Pildyk/Tele2 recharge in any kiosk and most supermarkets. I know that there are many doctors who are good at treating the disease but not so good at treating the patient. There are other doctors who are very good with patients, but are sometimes lacking in their medical skills. To find a doctor who is good at both is unfortuately rare.

I have a found a doctor who is not only good at both, he is perhaps the best doctor I have ever met. His name is Dr Cervin.

It is not just me. I have mentioned Dr Cervin to my friends and I know that some are seeing him. Most express their gratitude for the referal. This guy is that good.

Dr. Cervin studied medicine is Australia. His passport maybe Lithuanian, but his medical approach is very much western. He is that GP who you just feel confident in and comfortable with. He offers old-fashioned patient care with modern medical treatment. The ideal mix that you rarely find anymore. Needless to say his English is perfect Australian English.

Dr. Cervin's assistant is pure Lithuanian. She is very kind but her English is limited. So, if you call and speak English, she will probably connect you through to Dr. Cervin directly.

The other nice thing about Dr. Cervin is his location near the Cathedral Square. For many expats and visitors to Vilnius, this is very convenient.

All this comes at a reasonable price. At the moment the cost of a consulation is about 150 lta (approx. euro 50) plus the cost of any exams or proceedures. However, Dr. Cervin always consults with his patient before ordering any of these. So, you will not be suprised by the bill.

So if you are looking for the best GP in Vilnius, call up Dr Cervin and say G'day.

The Fresh Pastries of Rimi In Vilnius Old Town

We have recently discovered another Lithuanian secret: The fresh pastries of Rimi Supermarket on Didzjoi. I know that some people will think:

How can supermarket pastries be any good?

I know, I know. I understand why you are thinking this. I would think that too.

But if you come in the early morning, around 10am you can often see a woman making them fresh and taking them hot from the oven. You can even select your own warm, fresh chocolate croissant, apple turnover or cinnamon bun. I have often watched that woman preening her pastries as though it was her very own pastery shop. She is very careful to arrange everything nicely and keep everything clean. Watching her take care of her pastries gives me confidence in their quality.

What does this cost? These delicious pastries cost around 1.50 Lita each (under 0.50 euro). We have bought pastries from many of the bakeries of Vilnius and I have not found any better than Rimi Didzjoi.

Merselita : A Better Taxi Company In Vilnius?

Recently we were talking taxis with a Lithuanian friend and they could not stop talking about Merselita Taxi. The main thing that they liked was that the Merselita Taxi Cabs are modern and in good condition. So, I took the name and entered it into my mobile.

We are creatures of habit and have been very faithful to Ekipazas. We have really enjoyed the prompt and reliable service. The telephone operators speak English. And best of all, in two years, no Ekipazas driver ever tried to cheat. But I have to admit that some of the cars are a little bit run down. And sometimes it can be difficult to get one with functioning seat belts. Yesterday we called Ekipazas and the line was busy. We were in a hurry, so we called Merselita instead.

I have to admit the Meselita taxi that arrived was beautiful. It seemed new, large and spacious. And the price was the same as Ekipazes. 2 litas when you get in and 1.25 lta/km

I am not sure what we will do now.....

Exoskeletons: A Solution For Making Lithuania Accessible?

You may or may not have heard about the new technological breakthrough for people with mobility disorders. An exoskeleton may soon be used instead of a wheelchair. Four companies will soon be bringing robotic exoskeletons to market. Of interest is that the four companies come from very differnt parts of the globe, but none of the four come from Europe.

Nevertheless, exoskeletons may provide accessibility in some European cities, such as Vilnius where the old town is simply inaccessible and the costs to make it accessible is simply too high. Imagine if the city fathers of Vilnius would by 10 exoskeletons and make them available for a small fee to wheelchair users who would like to visit Vilnius for a weekend? Cost about 1 million Euros. But imagine the public relations draw that would have for the city and the amount of tourism that could bring?

Arrrogant Drivers Of Lithuania

I love Vilnius, I really do. And I meet very kind people in Vilnius. People are particularly kind and friendly when it comes to children. When I am with my baby more doors are held open, people help with the stroller or talk and wave to him. Once an older man scolded me because it was cool outside and my baby did not have a hat on. I took that as an act of kindness.

But something happens to Lithuanians when they get in a car.

Today I was crossing at a relatively quiet street in the old town and carrying my baby in my arms. There was no traffic and I was crossing in a cross walk.

As we were crossing in the crosswalk, one of the many arrogant drivers in this city accelerated and drove quickly around us, passing in front of us by no more than a meter. Had I been not looking and stumbled, he could have hit me and the baby.

This behavior is rare in most cities. Maybe it is because there are serious penalities for breaking the law. Maybe it is because there are police who actually patrol. As an expample, a citizen of Sweden was recently hit with a $1 million speeding ticket in Switzerland.

Maybe it is because of these serious penalties that if you put your foot in the street in Switzerland, drivers immediately stop. In Vilnius you rarely see police on patrol in the old town. There are no cameras in the old town and very rarely are bad drivers penalized. As a result, you have to be careful where you put your foot because someone may run over it.

Vilnius Christmas Bazaar 4 December 2010

If you will be in Vilnius on 4 December, consider going to the Old Town Hall(Rotušė) in the Town Hall Square of Vilnius on the intersection of Didzioji and Vokieciu Streets for the Annual Christmas Bazaar. We were discussing accessibility issues in Vilnius and I asked about Vilnius Univerity, "Is the university accessible? Do they have ramps and acessible classrooms?"

The answer was "The University is accessible. They have ramps and lifts. Some classrooms are not completely accessible because I can't sit under table but it's not a problem. I can write without table (on my knees).

So, the good news is that the University seems to be doing better than the city. But the lack of accessible tables and desks shows that there is some ways to go.

Having a Baby In Lithuania

Our baby was born at the Baltic American Clinic and our experience at the BAC could not have been better. Much of our positive experience at the Baltic American Clinic was due to two people: Our amazing OB/GYN Jurate and the excellent mid-wife Rasa. Rasa is something like the "mother superior" of the Baltic American Neonatology Center. Rasa runs everything with her experience and her charm. Rasa gave us our first lessons in parenthood. While Jurata took care of all things medical, Rasa was responsible for nearly everyhthing else (food, comfort, diaper changes, even the bill at the end of the stay). Rasa seemed to be always watching over us with her careful eye. We loved it!

The BAC is something like a cross between a 5 star hotel and a hospital. To be sure the BAC is not set up for difficult births and if they believe that your birth might be complicated, you will be referred to the University Hospital. But if you will have a normal birth, the BAC will be for you.

You will receive round the clock care in a private room, room service, highly trained staff who will cater to your every need. You will be comfortable and well cared for and receive some basic training if parenthood if you need it. Both parents and baby are welcome to stay 24 hours per day in the guest rooms. There are no visiting hours (at least for parents). Fathers are always welcome.

While our pregnancy and delivery at the BAC were only positive, we have not always been happy with other medical care at the BAC. Like everywhere else, whether you are happy or not will depend on the health care provider. But if you are having a baby in Lithuania, we would highly recommend delivering at the Baltic American Clinic.

Marks & Spencer Vilnius , Lithuania To Open Bigger Store

Recently we noticed that Marks & Spencer on Gedimino 9 was closed! This came as quite a shock, because we really like many M&S products, particularly their food and clothes. What we really like is the food that you can not otherwise get in Lithuania. It does tend to be a bit on the expensive side, so we do not buy as much as we would like to. But we often treat ourselves to their quality coffee, sweets and sauces.

So, when we went by and found that the place was boarded up and empty, with no notices on it, we thought that M&S had closed up like so many other stores. So, I wrote to them and asked if they were gone or just renovating. I quickly recieved this pleasant response:

Recently we have closed our store at shopping center Gedimino 9 but on the 1st of December we will reopen the new store at Gedimino avenue 20. The store will be bigger and will have a wider choice of all collections including frozen food and bakery.

This is great news! We hope that M&S will have an opening party to celebrate their new store.
